  • Moving

    • Moving - Definition and history

      • Moving - Definition

The word "Demenagement" in French (moving) Moving comes from two Latin words. "Demano" means to flow, descend, spread, and "demunitio" expresses the action of removing, taking or subtracting. Thus, moving means moving furniture within a dwelling or office to another location. We can also talk about the transfer of furniture and personal property from one place to another. It is an action that involves a commotion, a dislocation, and a commitment of a means of transport. But it also suggests, a move in. The operation of moving to a large city then became complex, due to various handling, transportation, and parking constraints

      • Moving - History

During the prehistoric period, our ancestors moved a lot, to places where they could find food. They also fled from opponents considered stronger. Sedentarization came with the application of agriculture, but did not change much the habit of men to move from one area to another. They travelled alone or in groups.

Since the industrial revolution of the 19th century, means of transport have been modernised. People were happy to use them for their travel. Those from the countryside migrated to the industrial city, with their belongings. They were then carrying out the first major moves, as we currently understand it. Nowadays, the changes in the economic situation and lifestyle are encouraging both individuals and companies to move more. Movements take place from the suburbs to the city, or vice versa. In France, travel due to the profession and changes of address of companies are growing rapidly. The move responds to this new market, which concerns more than two million French people annually.

    • Moving - Moving alone

      • The questions to ask yourself

You have just found your new home. At the same time, you are happy and embarrassed. Moving gives you as much worry as joy. According to the IFOP, it is the third source of stress among the French. The time seems too short, and the procedures are tedious, during this time. You have the choice between moving by your own means, or by professional movers. You can decide, after answering the following questions. Do you have time to really take care of it? Do you have the resources to do this? Do you want to participate in the move or will you let the movers take care of it completely?

Like many people, you want to manage on your own, because of the cost of a professional move. First, define a logical and plausible moving schedule. Moving alone is not always the cheapest solution. Several parameters are taken into account in a move. The volume to be moved, the size of the objects, the distance to be covered, the period of the move, the rental of a commercial vehicle, are essential constraints, which require know-how. Call the local Peace Office to get rid of bulky objects you no longer need.

For example, a family of 3 people, lives in a well-stocked T3, located on a floor with elevator. She moves to live in a dwelling located 20 km away, which would be almost identical in terms of accessibility. Moving alone, she will have to buy the boxes, rent a van, and pay for fuel, meals and drinks. The moving rate will be around 520 euros.

Moving by yourself can be done, not without risk. It will have to add the call to the service of at least four friends, any damage caused to the rental vehicle, toll charges and any rental of handling equipment. Costs can easily increase, stress added. With a professional, the price of the move will be 700 euros, but with less stress.

      • Commercial vehicle rental

You are not immune to surprises. Rent a car with a capacity slightly larger than the one calculated. If it has a large capacity, from 18 to 22 m3, choose the one with a tailgate, you will save time, safety and health. Moving is not an easy task, so make sure you rent a vehicle in good condition, because for such an operation, a breakdown would be very annoying and stressful.

The best way to rent a commercial car is to compare the prices and services offered by some car rental companies. Rental offers are often attractive. It is up to you to analyze them, and to analyze them, to get the best prices. Plan your rental well in advance, to avoid any last-minute surprises. Once you have chosen the car rental company, book the car immediately. Please read the general rental conditions carefully. If necessary, it is better to ask for clarification on points that seem dark to you. Anticipate the journey you will have to make. Take the time to check the mileage included in the rental, and the price of the extra mileage outside the contract. Study the conditions of the insurance, and the damage and theft deductible, as well as the coverage exclusions. In case you need it, ask what an additional driver might cost you. When picking up the car, inspect its general condition carefully. If you have to take it at night, take a flashlight with you for this operation.

      • The steps at the Town Hall

Notify the town hall and your neighbours, for parking your car. You must first request, from the Town Hall, an authorization to occupy the public domain. The request must reach the Traffic Regulations Department one week before the planned date of the move. If the places have date stamps, you are required to pay 5 euros per day and per place, from Monday to Saturday, usually rate for a move. In case you need to block the street, your request must be received ten days before the move. The request must include the following information. Your first and last name, your current address and the precise address for the interventions, the date of the operation, the time and duration, your telephone, fax and e-mail numbers. Consult a moving site for advice in this area.

After agreement of your request, the installation of the regulatory signage, for the reservation of the site, remains at your expense. You must place it 48 hours before the operation, and report it to the Police, who will carry out the necessary checks. The signage on the blocked street is also yours. There are signage professionals you can consult to do this work.

      • Tidying up

Storing your belongings in the truck is not always easy when you move. In general, a pro will advise you to place the furniture in the bottom, leaning against the truck panels. Be sure to place pads between the furniture and panels. You must secure them with straps, which will be attached to the tie bars.

Then place your boxes, first filling the bottom of the truck. Stack the lightest on the heaviest. The last boxes to be stored must be those containing essential items, such as the first aid kit, or small tools... Your mattresses will take last, the places parallel to the rear doors of the truck.

      • Advantages and disadvantages of moving alone

        • Advantages of moving alone

Moving alone is an opportunity to meet your close friends, who will come to help you. The action will take place in a rather relaxed atmosphere, with laughter, amidst the suffering they will often have to endure. In addition, you will have time to carefully store your items, and to draw up a list of them in cardboard boxes. The transfer to your new accommodation can be made on weekends, without overtime, and without risk of traffic jams.

You will have no difficulty either in deploying your packages or in putting them in their respective places. You will take more care of the things you really care about. Sometimes you may be eligible for financial assistance. It is your responsibility to request the corresponding information from the Town Hall. In general, the cost of a move alone is lower than with a moving company.

        • Disadvantages of moving alone

You are responsible for dismantling and reassembling your furniture. Depending on their volume, the time required for all operations is counted. Despite the goodwill of your friends, their age can have a significant impact on the speed of moving. They often use the strength of their arms, unless you have rented or bought handling equipment like a devil, or slippery skates...

Some of them will be able to help you for a fixed period of time. But they will stop, well before the end of your moves. And the lack of experience in this field can lengthen the packing time of your furniture. You may not respect the deadline for your move. Moreover, in our time, we are called upon to move several times in our lives, and friends get tired quickly...

The breakage of a valuable item by one of them can happen, and may seriously embarrass you. His civil insurance may not be able to cover the damage. You're not going to turn against your help, are you? To be covered by these types of surprises, you will need to take out additional damage insurance...

You will have to acquire by yourself, the boxes necessary for packaging, and the accessories to close them, and other materials that may no longer be useful to you. You will practically pack and load your goods in the van. You cannot rent more than one 10 to 12 m3 van unless you hire another driver. You should therefore make several trips depending on the volume of your goods.

In short, moving alone may have been possible when you are very young, such as when you are a student, but otherwise it poses many problems. Moving alone is not recommended. Indeed, the advantages are only theoretical (also concerning the price of the move), but the disadvantages are very real. The risk of personal injury to friends or the person being moved during the move is often underestimated, although it can have considerable dramatic consequences. From this point of view alone, moving by its own means is strongly discouraged. Let us not forget, moreover, that with a "helping hand", in undeclared work, there is only one step, and in the event of a serious accident, languages can become loose...

    • Moving - Use a company

      • The mover's choice

        • The volume calculation

The calculation of moving volume, or cubage, is an essential step in the preparation and evaluation of the moving rate. For this purpose, there is a standard table, which makes it possible to determine it globally. The various items and furniture are classified under specific headings, according to their normal location in a house. We then distinguish between living room furniture, bedroom furniture, kitchen furniture, and the rest called "other". The living room furniture is then arranged in descending order of volume. Examples include sofas and sofas, armchairs, wardrobes, tables and various shelves. The fragile devices can be stored with the lampshade, the small lamp, the halogen lamp on stand, and the simple suspended light.

Without making complicated calculations, it would be sufficient for you to mention the number of pieces of furniture in each of the rooms to be emptied. The consultation of the table will allow you to have an estimate of their volume in m3. You can also do this calculation online, on a mover's website. All moving professionals use a volume calculation table. Knowing the total volume of your belongings will give you an idea of the number of trips you should make. It depends on the volume of the commercial vehicle you want to rent. On the other hand, this volume will determine the number of boxes you should buy, and the price of the professional mover

        • The moving quote

If you rightly choose to hire a professional mover, you will have to launch a call for tenders. Movers make a free online estimate for your move. In general, moving companies offer three types of services, depending on your budget and needs. The cost of a move is 30% more expensive in the summer period, compared to a move in the spring or autumn. The same applies to the beginning and end of the month. The date of your move is therefore important.

If you want to move economically, the second and third weeks of the months, from mid-June to mid-September, are the favorable periods. The distance to travel plays an important role, as does the volume to be released. For example, a 50 m² two-room apartment containing 30 m3 of furniture will not require the use of a high-capacity truck, as is the case for the 100 m3 of furniture in a 150 m² house. The difficulty of access to your home, as well as the presence or not of an elevator, could generate new movement costs. Despite a declaration of the value of your belongings to your mover, it would be prudent to take out additional insurance for your furniture in the event of damage.

The quote Moving, must then contain the references of the moving company. It includes its name, address and trade register number. It will also include your name, address, date of move, volume to be moved, as well as the place of loading and delivery, with an indication of the distance between the two. The type of move, the general conditions, and the price of the move HT or TTC, are last. The quotation date marks the beginning of the negotiation. And the validity of the offer could force you to make your decisions earlier than expected. The signature of the moving estimate transforms it into a moving contract.

If you're looking for one cheap move, you can adopt the "entry-level move", or economical. In this case, the mover is only involved in the loading, transport and unloading on arrival of your furniture and boxes. It is your responsibility to pack your belongings, dismantle and prepare your furniture. If you want to take care of your "basic" boxes, the classic formula that movers will offer you is the "standard move". They will therefore manage the more technical aspects of the move, which will include dismantling and reassembling the furniture. They will also take care of fragile objects, such as dishes or trinkets...

If you want to sit back, you have the "Great Comfort" move. All you have to do is follow the process. The mover takes care of everything! He will pack your furniture, and all your objects and clothes, according to the rules of the art. He will transport them to your new home, unpack and reassemble them. The layout of your new interior will be done according to your instructions. Some movers provide a service from the connection to the commissioning of your household appliance. They will also fix your wall objects. Their service ends with the cleaning, or even the restoration of the accommodation you have left. But be careful, the movement cost will then be much higher!

Moving is a service that you can compare, just like an insurance or a mutual insurance company. Don't waste your time negotiating each pro mover. Competition, can be established in one click on some sites. Just give your contact details, and the probable date of your move, and you will get five free quotes within 24 hours from professional companies. All you have to do is study them quietly to find the best mover's rate.

        • The technical visit

The elected mover must carry out a free technical visit to your home. During this visit, he will refine your estimate, thanks to the calculation of the volume to be moved. He will occasionally assess possible difficulties, such as whether or not an elevator exists. He will evaluate the necessary moving equipment, and send it to you before the deadline. He will also check the possibility of parking the truck during the move.

You could take advantage of this passage, to ask him questions about the organization of the move, and possibly the move. He can also give you details on the moving rates applied, such as insurance, guarantees, transport... He will determine with you, the starting date of the operations. He will finally ask you to sign the contract for your move.

        • The declaration of value

The declaration of the total value of your assets is mandatory. The French Commercial Code stipulates in article 133-1, the total responsibility of the mover, in the event of breakage, loss or damage, during your move. Thus, it will serve as a basis for determining the mover's coverage. It sets out the compensation arrangements and their limits. It must then specify the total amount of your furniture and other effects. It also includes the unit value of the goods, which are outside the contractual liability limit defined in the quotation

Moving companies often suggest their own value reporting threshold. All objects whose value is higher than this threshold are listed piece by piece. The difficulty of this work lies in the valuation of materials that have already been used. The price considered for an item, is always the one mentioned on the purchase invoice. Otherwise, you have to take the price of new on the Internet, or in store. Otherwise, evaluation is difficult. For example, how much would you estimate for a refrigerator you bought for 800 euros last year? And what about your 5-year-old solid wood cabinet? In general, it is necessary to apply a dilapidated scale. For example, the depreciation of a household appliance is 10 to 20% per year.

However, in the event of an accident, this declaration of value only covers damage, for which the mover is responsible. If the moving truck, for example, would have a road accident where the driver is not at fault, the declaration of value will not be taken into account. The same shall apply to the theft of the moving van.

To have better coverage of your property, you should seek to fully cover the risks. The adoption of a complementary moving guarantee, or the taking out of a private insurance contract, will give you peace of mind. And for extra caution, take pictures of your belongings, unpackaged and being loaded into the truck. Keep your invoices carefully. The care you take in declaring the value of your move will allow you to assess your assets as accurately as possible. It will facilitate the establishment of your multi-risk residential contract. You must send this declaration, duly completed and signed, to the mover no later than 5 days before the move. It shall be accompanied by the consignment note.

      • Material preparations

        • Packaging preparation

If you do not choose a "comfortable" moving option, you will have to store a large part of your personal belongings in boxes. There are different types of cardboard boxes and special packaging for each of your items. A distinction is made between dishwashing cartons, equipped with crosspieces, those for books, and standard ones. There are also cardboard wardrobes for long clothes. For large volumes and bottles, reinforced cartons are available on the market. Their strength sometimes depends on how they are assembled. An unfolded cardboard box must be closed with an adhesive tape in the middle of the bottom, and along its entire length, once the edges of the bottom are crossed. This will prevent the bottom from breaking when handling the cardboard

The way the cardboard is filled also influences its strength. If it is too heavy, it can fail you during the move. It is necessary to think about its handling and transportability. A half-filled cardboard box becomes loosely rigid, and tears easily. The ideal is to fill it in correctly and completely. Heavy objects will be placed down, and lighter ones up. To close the upper part, close the flaps as for the bottom, before applying an adhesive tape along the entire length.

Don't forget to write a number on this part, which would correspond to the list of content you will find in a notebook. You could also stick a label on each box, and list its contents. Cardboard boxes containing food products must be easily identified. Those used for fragile products must be marked "FRAGILE".

The number of boxes should not be underestimated, to ensure a smooth and well-organized move. The surplus will always be used to protect fragile objects or furniture. As an indication, to move a 20 m3 studio, you will need fifteen to twenty boxes. For a T2 of about 50 m², it is easy to count the double. For a 4-room apartment, i. e. about 80 m², plan about sixty moving boxes. The smallest box can cost you one euro. Specific cartons can cost between 15 and 20 euros. The price of your boxes will decrease according to the quantity you buy. The purchase of packs of 20, or 50, or 100 boxes, seems by far interesting. A moving kit containing 60 boxes, three rolls of adhesive, two rolls of 20 m of bubble wrap, and mattress protection will cost you about 90 euros.

To get boxes, these days, you have to do some research early enough. With the recycling of cartons, supermarkets or distribution companies, or retailers, no longer have any cartons in stock. They lock them in containers, in compacted form. Contact sites specialized in the sale of packaging. They can deliver you cheap boxes, and in good condition. But be sure to check the price comparison before ordering. You will complete your order with adhesive tapes, or protective systems such as bubble wrap, or plastic covers...

        • Disassembly and cardboarding

Moving begins with the dismantling of everything that can be disassembled, such as tables, beds, cupboards and some chairs... The objects to be moved are classified into three main categories: furniture, fragile objects and those that are not. Their protections therefore differ in nature according to these rankings.

Their packaging must guarantee their protection against shocks and possible scratches. Furniture will be wrapped in blankets, or polyurethane or padded covers, or plastic films. The furniture repositories can be packed in wooden crates, specially designed to their size, or in bull pack and plastic film. The mover will use the usual materials, such as adhesive tapes, bubble roll, strapping strips...

Non-fragile items, such as clothing, will be stored in simple moving boxes. Hanging clothes will be placed in portable changing rooms that will be hermetically sealed. Smaller and thicker boxes, which can be easily handled, will hold the books. Their proper storage in order will make it easier to organize them in your new home. Pay particular attention to your personal papers. The Savings Booklet, insurance policy, deeds of donation, will, retirement papers, family vault concession contract, property title, rental leases, building permit, civil liability contracts, health records, must be kept for life. Miscellaneous bills such as telephone, movers, Internet, electricity, water and gas are to be kept for one year.

Fragile objects will include bottles, glasses and cups, plates, trinkets, household appliances... They will be carefully placed in suitcases, or crates specially designed to receive them. The packaging of works of art deserves special attention. They must be placed in custom container boxes. The wedging of the item in the box is an important step, sometimes entrusted to a specialist. For a better guarantee, the carrier has insurance accordingly, which, if necessary, will call on an expert.

The handling of certain heavy objects, such as refrigerators or freezers, will require the use of appropriate equipment. This case could become more complicated when the use of the elevator or a freight elevator is impossible. Old buildings, for example, are not equipped with elevators. Their windows on the courtyard are not served by a sufficiently wide aisle, which would allow the circulation of a furniture lift. The furniture will then be loaded on a backpack, which only a solid and knowledgeable mover could use. The mirror, doors and interior shelves should be removed from the ice cabinet. Be sure to remove the inside glass shelves of the refrigerators separately. The trap to avoid is more the sudden opening of the door of these pieces of furniture.

      • The actual move

        • The consignment note

On the day of the move, the mover arrives at your home early. The team leader will be happy to serve you and will give you a waybill. It is a mandatory contractual document, in accordance with the decree of 9 November 1999, issued by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. It centralizes all information relating to your move, and ensures that the moving company is authorized to transport your belongings.

He must accompany the carrier during the transfer of your goods. During a police check-up, he guarantees his professionalism, respectability and regularity towards the State. The consignment note must contain, in plain text, the name, postal addresses of the mover and his SIREN number, otherwise his intra-Community identification number. It will also include your personal addresses, the volume transported, the means and date of transport, the place of loading and delivery, and the deadline for operations. Authorizations from administrative authorities are also included.

The document required for your move consists of two parts, the consignment note and the delivery note. Each of the pieces is doubled, so that you have your copy. The instruction and execution sheet, and the declaration of value, will complete the file. You will sign the consignment note, before loading the truck, and also at the end of the delivery, to mark the end of the removal contract.

        • Truck loading

When everything is ready, your belongings are moved to be loaded onto the trucks. Whatever the journey to be made, the means used, the distances to be covered, and the loading of the packages, remain the same. The mover will respect certain truck loading rules to avoid any damage or deterioration along the way. He will take particular care in the arrangement of the goods inside the truck. Non-fragile heavy objects come first. Their stowage must be done carefully, so as to avoid any movement of the boxes or crates. Less fragile goods will be housed in such a way that they are properly secured, without being tightened. Fragile objects will be classified last, ensuring that they remain in position during the journey, without being crushed. Mirrors or marble slabs, or cabinet elements, or pianos, for example, will be strapped to the padded walls. If necessary, they will be dressed in blankets and wrapped in stretchable plastic wrap. And in some cases, covers can help to better protect delicate parts, such as refrigerator glass doors.

Driving the truck requires special caution. Any sudden jolt or braking can have an impact on fragile objects. The drivers of the moving trucks receive special training. They are trained in the rational use of the retarder, gearbox and brakes in order to keep the driving smooth. They are also trained, on the crossing at the level of speed breakers, and the crossing of level crossings.

        • The delivery

The move usually ends with the delivery of your goods to your home. It is your responsibility to carefully check the worksheet with the mover. The worksheet is also called an instruction sheet. It includes all the elements of the contract. It is used to prove the conformity of the removal service with your payment.

You must inspect the condition of your belongings, touring the rooms of your new home. In the event of a problem, such as scratches or cracks, breakage, you should make a reservation on delivery on the worksheet. You will clearly mention the observations. If you had taken out a guarantee or removal insurance, the description of the anomalies that you would have countersigned on the worksheet will be taken into account. In the event of a dispute, you have a legal period of 10 working days to protest and express your reservations later, by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt, to the removal company

      • Advantages and disadvantages of a mover

        • Advantages of a mover

Professional movers will act more quickly and with greater care when you move. They can provide you with quotes online as well as on fretbay.com, free of charge, in accordance with the rules. Despite a higher movement cost, compared to what you will bear when you do the move yourself, they make your life much easier. They specialize in packaging and filing your items. They have adequate means at their disposal to handle your large furniture and equipment

Moving with a pro is much better organized, and often only takes a day. Despite their experience and professionalism, movers can have surprises, such as breakages, scratches, or other damage. But their company is insured for these claims. Moving is a job in itself, requiring training and experience, and it is the only way to avoid the risk of personal injury, which is often very serious.

        • Disadvantages of a mover

The only disadvantage is the rate of a professional mover. You must make price and service comparisons for find the right mover. You must then launch several requests for quotes, which requires the visit of a few movers to your home. You must spend time to receive them. This is the only way to ensure a fair comparison of the different offers and to benefit from the best moving rate.

Despite the grouping of the pick-ups, the packaging boxes will not be marked. They will not allow you to easily identify the different objects you will need immediately. To facilitate your search for clothing, for example, you would have to unpack everything quickly. The only solution would be for you to put a little bit of your own. Undoubtedly, the small constraints of a move carried out by a moving company are derisory compared to all the benefits that it represents.

    • Moving - Official steps

      • Official steps before the move

        • Lease

Before any action relating to your move, if your accommodation is under lease, announce your leave by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt. This must be done in accordance with the rules of legal notice, usually three months. But the notice period may be reduced to one month in certain cases such as dismissal, transfer or for furnished apartments

Once you have set a date for the move, make every effort to get permission to block the road, which will serve as a loading area. You must do the same for the unloading area. These types of steps are your responsibility. It is obvious that the signature of a new lease is required in the event of the rental of the future domicile.

        • Termination or amendment of contracts

Before moving, a number of steps must be taken. These steps include the termination of contracts with suppliers. Energy suppliers (electricity and gas), are in the first place, because they will either close the meters or put them in the name of another occupant. In all cases, the meters will be read for the calculation of the balance of the invoice.

It is also necessary to warn certain service providers, such as telecoms and the post office. It is essential to forward the mail for a certain period of time. Insurance coverage for current and destination accommodation must also be notified. Depending on the particular situation, other providers must be notified.

      • Official steps after the move

        • Information for organizations (CAF, Taxes, Employment Pole, Employer...)

When moving, you are required to complete three administrative formalities. There is the change of address, administrative transfer and contract termination. Some companies have websites, where you can report your change of address online. Otherwise, you can send it by post, sufficiently in advance, to avoid having your usual mail returned.

You must send your change of address to all administrations and institutions linked to you. The transfer of your files can be done automatically or at your written request. If you move without changing your health insurance fund, your CPAM, or primary health insurance fund, would need a copy of the certificate of your Carte Vitale, accompanied by your change of address. Start with the bank, at least a month before the move. You can request a transfer to the agency near your new home. Write down your new IBAN. The day before your move at the latest, terminate your telephone contract. If you stay in the same geographical area, you can keep the same number. Otherwise, you'll get a new number.

In the event of a change of address, resulting in affiliation to a new fund, you must send your old and new CPAM, a copy of the Carte Vitale certificate, a copy of the TIB, and a status sheet. You can obtain the latter from the cash register. But you could also download it from the CPAM website. Your transfer will then be done automatically.

You must also send a change of address to your mutual insurance company. In case your bank details change, you must send them the corresponding IBAN. For the Caisse d'Allocations Familiales, CAF, a simple change of address letter would suffice, if you stay in the same sector. If not, you will make a request to transfer your file to your former centre, making sure to attach the proof of residence. You will operate in the same way for your pension fund.

Send by registered letter to your insurer, the termination of your insurance contract for your former home. Send with your letter the corresponding supporting documents. Ask for the transfer of your contract to your new home.

If you are looking for a job, and move into the same sector, you must inform the National Employment Agency, ANPE, of your change of address. The same will apply to your ASSEDIC. Otherwise, for both organizations, you will request a transfer of your files, to the former agency, with proof of address.

For your income taxes, first consult the sample transfer request letter template. A simple change of address letter would be sufficient if you stay in the same centre. Otherwise, you will send a request to transfer your file for the following year to your old and new tax office. A proof of residence with a precise moving date should be attached to your request. If you pay your taxes in third parties, you must first pay your taxes for the current year to your former tax centre and the first two thirds of the year following your move.

In case you pay your taxes in monthly installments, your due dates are always deducted from your former tax centre. The change of centre will only take place when the Treasury has registered and taken into account your new address. You will act in the same way, for the Housing Tax and the Property Tax, with the Treasury and the Tax Centre. The housing tax of your new home will be applied on January 1st of the year in question. But the property tax will be calculated, pro rata to the stay in the old and new residence. In parallel, inform your TV Royalty Centre and the Local Tax Centre by mail about the transfer of your file for the following year. You will find the contact details of your Centre on your last tax notice on the fee.

Request by registered letter, a certificate of cancellation from the schools where your children are attending school. This is the only way to ensure that your children are enrolled in the schools in your new borough.

Remember to terminate EDF/GDF contracts at least 15 days before your move. Read the meter readings with an agent from both organizations. The day after your departure from the accommodation, the contract must be terminated, and the balance must be sent to your new address. Do not forget to take the same steps in your new home for a new EDF/GDF subscription. For running water, if your old home is part of a multiple dwelling, there is no procedure to follow. But in an individual dwelling, start the procedure as with the EDF/GDF, in your old and new home.

Finally, be sure to inform your employer of your change of address. Give him your new contact details. If your RIB has been modified, give it at the same time as the copy of your CPAM and CAF, to your company's human resources manager. You will attach any other useful information.

        • Updating documents (car registration, identity card, passport...)

Finally, be sure to inform your employer of your change of address. Give him your new contact details. If your RIB has been modified, give it at the same time as the copy of your CPAM and CAF, to your company's human resources manager. You will attach any other useful information.

    • Moving - Transfer of companies

      • Description

        • National move

Every year in France, about 120,000 companies move and change premises. The principle of moving by a professional company remains the same as for the individual. Several service options, at different rates, are offered by these moving companies. You can choose the one that suits your needs, and in relation to your budgets.

Turnkey solutions, for example, leave all preparations in the hands of the mover. Thus, you can leave your current office on a Friday evening, and your new office is available on Monday morning. Interesting not, but certainly more expensive! You do not have to worry about the administrative formalities, or the means used to dismantle and reassemble your offices. The only precaution you should take is to photograph your belongings, still in place in your old offices.

        • International move

          • Choice of the society

To carry out an international move, you must choose an AFDI member company, or Association Française des Déménageurs Internationaux. This is the only way to guarantee safety, security and quality service, which requires flawless know-how. You must consult several companies, and make a price and service comparison. You can get a quote online, or by mail.

Two categories of movers are possible. There are companies that offer you their services, used to simply moving of all kinds. They can operate under good conditions, and at a lower cost, if you do not have any special facilities. But those that specialize in business transfers would be more appropriate, if you have, for example, a lot of computer equipment.

Before concluding a contract, ask for several quotes online, and consult the comparators of move price. Find out about the additional services that the mover may be able to offer you. For example, could it ensure the disconnection and restart of your IT equipment? Would he be able to manage your inventory like your materials, supplies or printed matter? What is its transfer potential and its ability to handle heavy equipment, such as your trunk or shelves? Is its vehicle fleet large enough to ensure that the moving deadline is met?

If you are, for example, a sales centre for specific musical equipment, moving a piano, like the harpsichord, requires special arrangements. The mover must be well equipped, in different padded covers and adapted to the circumstance. It must have specific straps and trolleys, roller skates and transfer skids. For all these reasons, the movement cost of a piano is between 200 and 400 euros. For an upright piano, you will pay about 200 euros. It is 230 to 250 euros for a quarter tail. And you must count around 380 to 400 euros for a half-timbered piano.

          • Steps and obligations

The moving company sends you an advisor, following your request for a quote. He will assess the volume to be moved, and will observe on site the provisions to be made for fragile elements. He will study the special precautions to be taken for the various delicate passages. At the same time, it will determine the necessary tools and handling equipment. The company will send you a quote as soon as possible. It will be up to you to analyze it and compare it with other estimates, before signing it.

The international moving company must first inform you of the local characteristics of the moving country. He must always offer you a standardised packaging, designed for air or sea transport, in particular for furniture that will be placed in crates or containers. It is responsible for all administrative and customs formalities for each of the possible destinations. The organization of actions between freight forwarders and the various final correspondents is also the responsibility of the company.

      • Organization

        • Specifications

To be successful, your company's move must be carried out according to a rational approach. Its planning must begin with the establishment of specifications. The latter will be carried out according to the AFNOR NF X 50 - 815 standard, which describes the development of specifications and technical solutions. It must contain details of your needs and constraints.

The organization of the inventory, assessments, and dismantling must be included and described in detail. The layout plan for the new office should be as clear as possible. The various preparatory phases will be detailed there, to allow a perfect synchronization of the actions of all stakeholders. The moving schedule must end with a schedule of operations.

        • Formalities

In accordance with the French Commercial Code stipulated in Article 133-1, you must follow the same formalities as those required for a national move. You draw up a declaration of value for your personal belongings, and for your furniture. Don't forget to ask the moving company for damage insurance to cover your belongings during the transfer. This coverage is confirmed as soon as you receive the insurance certificate.

Before loading, you must sign a "removal consignment note". It must mention the general conditions of transport for your move. The written notification of the contents of each of your boxes and parcels is recorded on a packing list, completed by the moving company. This operation takes place during the loading of the truck(s).

        • Delivery time

The delivery time of your goods varies according to the country of destination. The means of transport can be composed of trucks, trains and ships. Depending on the shipment obligations, the means of handling will be more or less numerous. These are factors that influence the cost and time of your move.

If you move to North America, the United States or Canada, for example, you will need 4 weeks. For a destination in Asia, a delay of one to two months would be necessary. To move to Africa, you will need to count within 5 weeks. And for Australia, depending on ship movements, it should be expected within 8 weeks.

    • Moving - Vehicles, equipment, supplies and ecology

      • Vehicles and equipment used

        • Vehicles

The vehicles used in moving are of two types, those rented by individuals, and those of professional movers. Vehicles rented by private individuals are generally commercial vehicles of 10 to 30 m3. Up to 3.5 tonnes, they do not require any specific permits. For larger tonnages, with or without trailer, a heavy goods vehicle licence with specific driver training is required.

Movers' trucks are generally medium and large. They can be presented in the form of a dropside truck, and with a covering tarpaulin. They can be platform trucks, semi-trailers, designed to receive 20, 35 or 40 foot containers. Goods must be protected from wet, theft and bad weather. Some trucks are equipped with elevators, which make it easier to load the truck.

        • Materials

Removal packaging must be of good quality, especially for boxes or crates for heavy objects. Always remember to close them tightly. Handling equipment is also important. They will be useful during the dismantling of some furniture. Wear protective gloves during these operations.

For small internal movements, the mover will use roller skates, straps and sliding pads to put under the furniture. For some furniture, the mover may use a sled. Moving out of the rooms sometimes requires a devil and a furniture lift. In case the stairs have to be lowered, special devices are available to move heavy but low volume refrigerators or cartons on the back.

        • Supplies

A move requires a number of small supplies. These include: adhesives, twine, labels, stretch films... You also need bubble wrap, covers, bags, blankets, covers, but in principle this last list is provided by the mover. "Elbow grease" cannot be bought, but a good supply should always be provided...

      • Ecology

        • Ecological impact

The ecological move is an economic and practical concept, which aims to limit any waste. However, moving is often associated with waste because it generates a lot of waste. The coupling of environmental protection with travel remains an essential practice. You will move at the lowest cost, with savings of up to 50%.

It is always possible for you to get green moving quotes. Manage truck use efficiently, to avoid wasting time. It is a question of reconsidering all the parameters, in order to have the optimal route of the vehicle, therefore with a minimum fuel consumption. The materials used must be economical and well designed. You can rent boxes and accessories. They must be used by other customers after your move. Otherwise, you can use the ecological bins.

        • Responsible moving

Responsible moving is about carefully sorting your belongings, so that you can classify those that are no longer useful to you, especially if they are bulky. For example, you can give them to charities or to your neighbours. You must also use recyclable moving equipment. For example, it is a question of using eco-friendly boxes or bins instead of cardboard boxes. The same applies to cushioning accessories, or straps, made from recycled materials. Use your old clothes, blankets or newspapers to do this.

Ecological boxes for moving are light and rigid. They are available in several sizes and are hermetically sealed. They are easy to transport, while protecting your belongings efficiently. The adoption of ecological moving is therefore entirely up to you. Take the time to move in, and don't buy any more frivolous items. Never leave your garbage on the sidewalk. In this way, you will contribute to the preservation of the environment in a responsible way.

    • Moving - Regulations and organizations, advice and moving rates

      • Regulations and organizations

        • Regulation

In France, relocation is governed by the regulations of the Road Freight Transport, TRM, according to the APE Code Déménagement 4942Z. The legislative bases are found in the law of 30 December 1982, relating to the orientation of inland transport, or LOTI. It concerns the reinstatement of all transport companies for hire or reward, whatever the motor vehicle used, two or four wheels, in the status of freight carrier

However, the three-day time limit for claims for the latter, does not apply to the case of the move. They must comply with the following three conditions during the performance of their duties while they are in operation. These are financial and professional capacity, and professional honorability.

Financial capacity requires the company to have a certain amount of equity capital, in proportion to the number of cars it uses for its activities. Professional competence is mandatory for all companies using vehicles with a maximum authorised weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes. The certificate can be obtained in three different ways, after passing an examination, or after validating professional experience, or with the applicants' diplomas

Professional integrity guarantees that there are no criminal convictions or breaches of regulations by the company's various legal officers. The same applies to its transport manager. These offences concern, in particular, transport regulations in general, labour and road safety regulations

        • Organisms

Companies must be registered in the register of carriers and lessors, which is managed by the Regional Equipment Directorates, or DRE. The Chambre syndicale du déménagement is the representative body of the profession of mover in France. Its purpose is to regulate, preserve and promote the trades of movers and their related activities. It is composed of men and women, who excel in moving, and lawyers, who master the techniques of moving.

She is your contact person at all stages of the move. She can inform you on specific points related to moving procedures. It is open to dialogue with both local authorities and consumers. It defends the interests of its members and yours. Whether it is at the level of consultation, or a dispute between you and a mover, you can always turn to the union chamber of the mover.

        • Financial assistance

For a family, it is possible in some cases, to benefit from certain assistance that will cover the cost of the move. This is the case if you are moving because of the birth of your third child. The same applies if you have at least three children, and the last one is under the age of two. You can contact CAF for the corresponding bonus...

If you also receive housing allowance, or the APL, you can claim a moving allowance. The amount of the premium is determined by CAF. For three children, it is a maximum of €897.89. It would be a maximum of 974.71 euros if you have four children. For each additional child, you will have 74.82 euros.

Maybe you are entitled to social assistance? Your family and professional situation is taken into account in this case. The amount of this support varies greatly from one municipality to another. In your case, it would be better if you check with your local council. Relocation assistance may be granted to you, depending on the collective agreement adopted by your company. Also think about the number of days of paid holidays. Finally, you could use bank loans and consumer credit. You can get information from your bank, or from credit institutions, to at least spread the bill for your move. Some movers may grant you payment of your moving invoices in three installments at no cost.

      • Moving advice and rates

        • Advice (insurance...)

Rent the vehicle adjusted to the volume of your goods. Driving a commercial vehicle for your moves does not require a special permit. Check the rental agreement anyway, on insurance matters. However, it requires some precautions. Distribute the load evenly inside the vehicle to avoid creating an imbalance. Observe the maximum load of the vehicle. You may notice an overload, in terms of tyres and shock absorbers. You will never go by like this, unnoticed by police checks. The template is not the same as that of your usual car. You need to adjust your seat and mirrors before you leave. The height of the vehicle is indicated on the windscreen. Be careful with underpasses, bridges, gas stations, and power cables.

Look carefully if you are not going to drag tree branches, or balconies, when manoeuvring. Be guided by someone else, placed in front of the vehicle. Be sure to negotiate the bends carefully, as your vehicle is longer than usual. Slow down in time. The braking distance of a heavy goods vehicle is longer. Keep a safe distance from other cars. It would be better to test the braking distances, especially if you are in winter.

Read the insurance coverage clauses related to your move carefully. Is there any additional coverage beyond the carrier's contractual liability? How long does it take to implement this coverage in the event of a claim? What are the coverages in case of force majeure, such as damage that is not attributable to the mover? What is the compensation rate for your property in this case? How long does it take to qualify for the insurance premium? Remember that your first insurance is your declaration of value. Nevertheless, you are not insured for your own packaging errors, for example. Force majeure such as truck theft, accidents, assaults..., is not covered by your declaration of value either. And a bad constitution of your goods, with internal defects that make them sensitive to transport, does not count either in the guarantee of your declared values.

        • Moving rates

The rental of a moving truck alone is dependent on the capacity of the transportable goods. A 9 m3 van, for example, can be rented from 65 euros, for a daily fixed price of 100Km. It is necessary to count from 105 euros, for that of 22 m3. The rental of equipment such as the furniture lift costs around 180 euros per hour. The half-day costs about 270 euros. The rental of a devil is 15 to 20 euros per day. The bubble wrap will cost you between 10 and 20 euros per 100 meters, and the tape costs between 3 to 6 euros.

The moving rates applied by professionals vary according to the formula you have chosen, the distance to travel, and the volume to move. For example, for a volume of 10 m3 of goods, to be transported over a distance of 50 km, the economic formula would cost you between 500 and 650 euros, while it would cost between 550 and 700 euros in the standard formula. If you want the comfort package, you have to pay between 700 and 900 euros. In this last package, the cost of a move of a volume of 60 m3, will be between 2900 and 3700 euros. In the economic package, it will cost you between 2000 and 2600 euros.

At Fretbay, the quality / price ratio of a move is excellent and the service will meet your expectations.
